CASE SUMMARY:

  • CASE: Deliver the Baby Blob to its Big Brother Blob in London!
  • OUTCOME: Even though the OSMU van ran out of fuel in the middle of the desert, the team was able to refuel and deliver the Baby Blob to its Big Brother. They measured 4 litres of water and caught the Baby Blob in a non-porous container!

COLD CASE EXTENSION ACTIVITY:

Something VERY ODD has happened! Baby blobs are moving around and blobbing all the non-porous objects in the town! You must stop them from blobbing by finding your own porous and non-porous objects.

To complete your mission you must:

  • 1. Find both porous containers AND non-porous containers
  • 2. With the help of an adult (and over a sink or outside), pour water in each container and see if liquid passes through! If it does, that means it’s porous.

SYNOPSIS FOR TEACHERS/PARENTS:

In this episode the Mobile Unit’s van runs out of fuel (i.e., water), leaving the team stranded in the desert. They must refuel their van quickly to save London from being blobbed. The Squad uses their knowledge about liquids and units of measurement to accomplish their mission.

This episode teaches children about litres and how to measure different amounts of liquids using addition. It also introduces children to the properties of different surfaces and objects that are capable of holding liquids (e.g., porous vs. non-porous materials).

CURRICULUM EXPECTATIONS:


Grade 1 Math - Measurement

  • Estimate, measure, and describe the capacity and/or mass of an object, through investigation using non-standard units
  • Describe the properties of solids and liquids

Grade 2 Math - Measurement

  • Estimate, measure, and describe the capacity and/or mass of an object, using a variety of non-standard units
  • Compare and order a collection of objects by mass and/or capacity, using non-standard units

Grade 3 Math - Measurement

  • Choose benchmarks for a kilogram and a litre to help them perform measurement tasks
  • Estimate, measure and record the mass of objects using the standard unit of the kilogram or parts of a kilogram (e.g., half, guarter)
  • Estimate, measure, and record the capacity of containers (e.g. juice can, milk bag), using standard unit of the litre or parts of a litre (e.g. half, quarter)
  • Compare and order a collection of objects, using standard units of mass (i.e., kilogram) and/or capacity (i.e., litre)
