Raising the Bar

Shaw

CASE SUMMARY:

  • CASE: Go to Graphing Headquarters to find out how the Mobile Unit
can increase its ranking in the Odd Squad Magazine Progress Report.
  • OUTCOME: The Mobile Unit met with the Chief of Graph and together they read bar graphs, created pie graphs, and ate a lot of pie! By creating different graphs, they found out that when we split up the number of hard cases versus the number of easy cases, the Mobile Unit actually solved the most hard cases compared to all the other units! Graphs are awesome!

COLD CASE EXTENSION ACTIVITY:

Oh no! Something VERY ODD has happened! Pie graphs are turning into dessert pies--apple, blueberry and pumpkin pie, oh my! You must save the information on the pie graphs and stop them from turning into delicious pies!

To complete your mission you will need:

  • 1. Find and collect 10 of your favourite toys.
  • 2. Sort the toys into different groups based on their colour. For example, put all your blue toys in one group, all of your green toys in another, and all of your red toys in the last group.
  • 3. Count the number of toys in each group and record it in this chart like this so you don’t forget!

TIP: record your findings in a chart like this!
Groups / ColourHow many?
Group 1: __________
Group 2: __________
Group 3: __________

  • 4. Now, create a graph like this and fill in the bars with the information you collected.

SYNOPSIS FOR TEACHERS/PARENTS:

In Raising the Bar, the Mobile Unit gets ranked low on the Odd Squad Magazine progress reports. Omar and Oswald visit the Graphing Headquarters to dig deeper into the results of the report. They read and create different graphs to see how their progress compares to other Odd Squad Precincts.

This episode teaches children about the different types of graphs (e.g., bar graphs, pie charts) and how to read them. It also encourages more complex thinking by showing children how graphs can change when the data/results are split up in different ways.

CURRICULUM EXPECTATIONS:

Grade 2 Mathematics - Data Management and Probability

  • Demonstrate an ability to organize objects into categories, by sorting and classifying objects using two attributes simultaneously
  • Collect and organize primary data that is categorical or discrete and display the data using one-to-one correspondence in concrete graphs, pictographs, line plots, simple bar graphs, and other graphic organizers, with appropriate titles and labels and with labels ordered appropriately along horizontal axes, as needed
  • Read primary data presented in concrete graphs and other graphic organizers and describe the data using mathematical language
  • Demonstrate an understanding of data displayed in a graph by comparing different parts of the data and by making statements about the data as a whole

Grade 3 Mathematics - Data Management and Probability

  • Demonstrate an ability to organize objects into categories, by sorting and classifying objects using two or more attributes simultaneously
  • Read primary data presented in charts, tables, and graphs, the describe the data using comparative language, and describe the shape of the data
  • Interpret and draw conclusions from data presented in charts, tables, and graphs
