Episode 309

Into the Woods

Shaw

CASE SUMMARY:

  • CASE: Find the antidote to cure Agent Omar’s serious case of
    Clownotosis.
  • OUTCOME: Agent Oswald and Agent Opal went on a mission into the Odd Woods to find the three objects they needed to create the antidote. In order to find the objects they had to measure the temperature of different pumpkins using a thermometer, measure the weight of different rocks using a scale, and measure the length of bamboo sticks using a ruler. Once they collected all the items they created the antidote that cured Clown Omar!

COLD CASE EXTENSION ACTIVITY:

Something VERY ODD has happened! Everyone in town has caught a case of Clownotsis! You must find the antidote and cure everyone!

To complete the mission you will need the following:

  • 1. 3 objects of different length and weight
  • 2. Ruler
  • 3. Scale
  • 4. Thermometer

Once you’ve gathered your materials, complete the following steps:

  • 1. Measure the length of each object using a ruler. Rank them in order from shortest to longest.
  • 2. Weigh each item on a scale. Rank the objects in order from lightest to heaviest.
  • 3. Since you can’t take the temperature of your objects, try taking your own temperature and the temperature of the other people in your house, and rank the temperatures from lowest to highest!
  • 4. Great job! You have found all the objects to the antidote! Now, there is one final step to cure the town from Clownotosis: Have the person with the lowest temperature hold the shortest object in one hand and the heaviest object in the other hand. Now, get them to stand on one leg for a whole minute. If they succeed, the town is cured!

SYNOPSIS FOR TEACHERS/PARENTS:

In this episode, the Agents had to find special objects to create an antidote that would help cure Agent Omar’s case of Clownotosis. To find each object, they had to measure the properties of each object using various methods such as using a thermometer to measure temperature, using a scale to measure weight, and using a ruler to measure length. They were able to find all the objects and save Agent Omar.

This episode teaches children about how to read a thermometer (in Celsius), read a scale (in kilograms) and read a ruler (in cm). In addition, this episode introduces children to the different types of data including numerical and categorical data.

CURRICULUM EXPECTATIONS:

Grade 2 Math - Measurement

  • Estimate and measure length, height, and distance, using standard units (i.e., centimetre, metre) and non-standard units
  • Select and justify the choice of a standard unit (i.e., centimetre or metre) or a non-standard unit to measure length
  • Use a standard thermometer to determine whether temperature is rising or falling

Grade 2 Math - Data Management and Probability

  • Demonstrate an ability to organize objects into categories, by sorting and classifying objects using two attributes simultaneously
  • Read primary data presented in concrete graphs, pictographs, line plots, simple bar graphs, and other graphic organizers, and describe the data using mathematical language
  • Distinguish between numbers that represent data values and numbers that represent the frequency of an event
  • Demonstrate an understanding of data displayed in a graph by comparing different parts of the data and by making statements about the data as a whole

Grade 3 Math - Measurement

  • Estimate, measure, and record length, height, and distance, using standard units (i.e., centimetre, metre, kilometre)
  • Estimate, read (i.e., using a thermometer), and record positive temperatures to the nearest degree Celsius
  • Identify benchmarks for freezing, cold, cool, warm, hot, and boiling temperatures as they relate to water and for cold, cool, warm, and hot temperatures as they relate to air
  • Choose benchmarks for a kilogram and a litre to help them perform measurement tasks
  • Estimate, measure, and record the mass of objects, using the standard unit of the kilogram or parts of the kilogram
  • Compare standard units of length and select and justify the most appropriate standard unit to measure length
  • Compare and order objects on the basis of linear measurements in centimetres and/or metres in problem-solving contexts
  • Compare and order a collection of objects, using standard units of mass (ie., kilogram) and/or capacity (i.e., litre)

Grade 3 Math - Data Management and Probability

  • Demonstrate an ability to organize objects into categories, by sorting and classifying objects using two or more attribute simultaneously
  • Read primary data presented in charts, tables, and graphs, then describe the data using comparative language, and describe the shape of the data
  • Interpret and draw conclusions from data presented in charts, tables and graphs
