DINO EXPERIMENT 515

QUESTION:

Why would two dinos from the same family fight?

BACKGROUND RESEARCH NOTES:

  • Some dinos look a little bit different – like how many spikes they have – but they actually belong to the same family.

MY PLAN:

Become a Stegosaurus to see if the Kentrosaurus will attack me.

FIELD NOTES:

  • When I got close to the Kentrosaurus wearing my Stegosaurus costume, it attacked me and destroyed my costume! But I don’t know why ...
  • The real Stegosaurus came back. Once it got close to the Kentrosaurus, the two dinos started fighting again!
  • I realized that they were fighting over a bucket of water, not to hurt each other. Just like sisters and brothers fight over things they don’t want to share!

FINDING:

Some dinosaurs compete for food and water, even ones from the same family! Just like siblings.

FOR TEACHERS / PARENTS:

  • About the Episode: Dana embarks on a new experiment to find out why two dinosaurs from the same family – the Stegosaurus and Kentrosaurus – are fighting. Dana finds out that even though some dinosaurs are from the same family, they still compete over food and water. This episode teaches children that dinosaurs belong to different families.
  • Extension Activity: What does your family look like? Create your own family portrait.
Grab a piece of paper and some crayons and draw a picture of your own family.

    1. What makes each of your family members the same? Do you have the same hair colour? Do you like the same kinds of clothes? Write down some similarities.
    2. What makes each of your family members different? Are you different heights? Are your eyes different colours? Write down some differences.

When you are done drawing your family portrait, try drawing a portrait of your favourite dinosaur family.
  • Heart Moment: In this episode, Dana borrows Saara’s robe without asking. Saara gets upset because Dana always borrows her things without asking first. Dana eventually apologizes when she realizes that Saara is really upset. Can your child think of a time that something similar has happened to them? How did they feel when this happened? This is a good opportunity for you to talk to your child about the importance of asking to borrow things before taking them. Sharing, turn taking and personal space are important topics to discuss with children at this age.
